Rain Melts the Wintry Mess Away; More Rain Wednesday

Published: 2.4.18 10:11am

Good Morning Folks! Reports are coming in from across the region with an inch of snow/sleet on average for most locations, followed by freezing rain with a glaze in parts and now its raining as temps both aloft and at the surface warm above freezing. Showers will come to an end by the late morning hours and with temps rising to the low – mid 40’s today, most of the wintry precip will melt this afternoon. Isolated showers are possible through the early evening hours and then another disturbance arrives, this time out of the NW. This setup will bring with cold air and allow for light snow showers along the TN line, with an inch or two likely along the Smokies, while places like Balsam pick up a dusting by sunrise. Temps tonight crash into the upper teens – low 20’s so be careful tomorrow morning as black ice is likely along untreated roads.

Monday features a sunny yet chilly day as temps only reach the mid 30’s – mid 40’s, alongside NW winds around 10 – 15mph, so be sure to layer up if you’re planning on being outside most of the day. Temps Monday night will bottom out to the upper teens in parts of the valley, while the ridgelines sit comfortably in the upper 20’s, all due to calming winds, clear skies and cold air drainage.

Tuesday and Wednesday offer up a decent amount of rain with showers developing around the late afternoon hours Tuesday and peaking in coverage Wednesday mid morning, winding down by the late night hours. Most of the area will pick up an inch or more rain and fortunately temps will be above freezing so all precip will fall as rain; mid 40’s – mid 50’s both days, with Wednesday a degree or two cooler than Tuesday, overnight lows dip into the low 40’s Tuesday but the upper 20’s – low 30’s Wednesday night.

Cooler air rushes into the region on the backside of the departing front Thursday, holding temps to the low 40’s – low 50’s both days. Another system is likely by the weekend (all rain), however timing is not agreeable among the models and although we cannot say for sure showers will develop early Saturday, most of the signs point to a Saturday morning start, early Sunday morning exit.

Overall, melting temps today clean up the wintry mess, sunshine tomorrow and then showers late Tuesday through Wednesday, drying up once again Thursday and Friday with a weekend rain event likely. ENJOY!
