Near Zero Temps this Week

Published: 1.2.18 6:29am

Good Morning Folks! The highlight of the discussion is of course the deep cold and how long it will last, with many schools across the region this morning on a delay. Subzero temperature readings are coming in from along the ridgelines, while the majority of us throughout the lower elevations step out into the single digits, however even a light breeze can cause subzero wind chills, so bundle up and covered exposed skin. Sunshine will dominate the landscape today with passing clouds overhead for most of SW NC tomorrow and then its colder and drier Thursday through Saturday. There is a chance for snow Sunday into next week, but it being so far out we will simply mention its possibility at this time as many things are likely to change between now and this weekend. Be sure to (if you haven’t already) wrap pipes/drip faucets, bring in pets and check in on those who might need help during this cold spell. All in all, it will be brutally cold for our region this week, with a short window of time above freezing and then it’s back into the icebox next week till this pattern snaps, which looks to be by the middle of the month.

Sunshine today will do little to keep temps from rising above freezing as the entire region remains below 32˚F, with highs in the low 20’s – low 30’s. Temps dip into upper single digits – middle teens tonight under increasing clouds.

Clouds move through the region tomorrow with a few flurries along the ridgelines closer to the TN line, with temps only reaching the mid 20’s – low 30’s. Factor in NW winds around 10 – 20 mph for the higher elevations and wind chill values dip down to and at times below 0˚F. Temps Wednesday night push back into the single digits for most of the region as clouds clear the region.

Sunshine sets up shop Thursday and remains in business through Saturday, with clouds increasing Sunday. Temps only reach the upper teens – upper 20’s Thursday and Friday but climb to the mid 20’s – mid 30’s Saturday. We rise above freezing for most of the region Sunday as temps reach the mid 30’s – low 40’s but should dip back below freezing overnight into Monday, setting up the chance for wintry precip. We should know more about this potential event Thursday. Overnight lows this week will continue to dip into the single digits – low teens each night, so bundle up and remain inside if you can.

Overall, brutally cold this week with dry weather for the most part and it looks like the cold remains as we head into next week. ENJOY!
