Scattered Thunderstorms Today; Minor Clearing Tomorrow

Published: 6.19.17 8:38am

Good Morning Folks! A tenth to a quarter inch of rain fell across the region Sunday and today we expect much more to fall, winding down later tonight as a front approaches the region from the west. This front will drop an inch or more of rain today through Tuesday morning and add to the 7 day totals, ranging from 1.25 – 4” across SW NC. The front should stall to our south and allow for a mix of sunshine and clouds tomorrow through Thursday, however isolated shower chances will linger through the middle of the week. The models point to a tropical system developing in the Gulf of Mexico, pushing its way into the region later in the week and because of such, we have gone with scattered showers for Friday and Saturday. We ask you take the late week forecast with a grain of salt as many things could change, but as of this morning we are going with scattered showers.

Clouds will increase across the region through the morning hours and isolated showers are possible, however the majority of the action will occur later on this afternoon and evening. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will push in from the west as the front approaches the region, eventually crossing overnight into Tuesday. Although the front crosses the entire region, it seems the highest rainfall totals will be along the TN line, but generally all of SW NC should pick up a half inch or more of rain by the late evening hours. Another quarter – half inch of rain will fall overnight into Tuesday and showers will wind down to isolated coverage by sunrise. Temps today will only hit the upper 60’s – low 80’s depending upon elevation and dip back into the upper 50’s – low 60’s tonight.

Tuesday through Thursday brings us a mixed bag of sun and clouds but there is likely to be more clouds than sun Tuesday and Thursday, while Wednesday is our best chance for mostly sunny skies. Temps will push into the low 70’s – low 80’s all three days, which is right around normal, however overnight lows will settle into the low – mid 60’s, which is tad warm for this time of the year. Isolated showers are more likely tomorrow than Thursday but isolated shower chances exist each afternoon, with the majority of the action occurring along the escarpment as tropical moisture pushes north from the Gulf.

Friday into the weekend is a tossup at this point, however the models are trending toward tropical moisture pushing into the region Friday and hanging around through Sunday. This should develop scattered showers each afternoon, with the possibility for heavy downpours and training cells that could bring us a decent soaker, but as we mentioned up top, take this portion of the forecast with a grain of salt. Temps push back into the low 70’s – mid 80’s as southerly flow keeps temps near normal, with overnight lows in the mid – upper 60’s.

Overall, soggy today, isolated showers Tuesday through Thursday and then scattered showers late this week into the weekend. ENJOY!
