Today is the Coldest Day of the Week

Published: 2.16.17 8:11am

Good Morning Folks! Temps are slightly colder in the valleys than the ridgelines and we’ll see this divide grow tonight as another round of radiational cooling occurs. Sunshine dominates the landscape today and tomorrow, with clouds building early Saturday and isolated showers falling that afternoon. Sunshine then sets up shop Sunday and will continue doing business till Tuesday as another round of high clouds and light showers develop, with increasing coverage on Wednesday. Temps all the while will be near normal today but eventually rise to the low – upper 60’s Friday into Sunday, peaking to near 70°F on Monday and Tuesday of next week! For those who enjoy winter and all of the activities it brings, we encourage you to get in some runs at Cataloochee Ski Area today through Saturday before the warmth eats at their base. However, with that being said, they will be fine heading into next week as their base is growing as we speak, with mid station down under the onslaught of snowguns.

Mostly sunny skies today bring temps into the upper 30’s – low 50’s, which will be our coldest day of the week and likely the next seven days as well. Strong winds out of the NW will continue across the higher elevations, with sustained wind speeds around 15 – 20mph and gust up to 40mph at times. Elsewhere across the region we’ll deal with a steady breeze but all of the area should notice a decline in the wind as we move into the evening hours, allowing for radiational cooling to occur in the valleys. This should bring temps down into the low 20’s for the valley and perhaps the upper 20’s – low 30’s across the ridgelines; mostly clear skies will sit overhead.

Friday through Sunday offers much warmer temps as they push into the low 50’s – mid 60’s all three days, with temps a few degrees cooler on Saturday. This slightly cooler afternoon is due to an increase in clouds that will develop late Friday night, increasing throughout the day as isolated showers pepper the area after midday. Most of the action will be closer to the SC state line as the bulk of the rain will be along the Deep South and Gulf Coast (our region is dealt a passing glance). Sunshine will return Sunday and overall, it should be a pleasant end to the week and weekend, with overnight lows in the upper 30’s – upper 40’s each night.

Monday and Tuesday bring temps into the mid 50’s – upper 60’s with sunshine continuing into Monday and clouds increasing on Tuesday, possibly setting up a light rain event for Wednesday. We will want to monitor this as some of the models bring us a decent amount of rain, while others deal us another passing glance.

Overall, pleasant today even with it being slightly chilly and then much warmer Friday through the middle of next week with a slight rain chance Saturday afternoon. ENJOY!
