About Local Yokel Weather

Ever checked the forecast from national weather providers and been left high and dry? or worse cold and wet? Im sure it has happened to everyone but for folks around here, perhaps too much. Jackson County and the Southern Appalachians are notorious for its extreme weather and abrupt climates, which makes forecasting that much more difficult. Among other reasons the “megaweather” websites are just too big to have accurate forecast without losing attention to detail. Anyone can forecast for the general area with vague language, but forecasting and actually covering local locations with descriptive discussions can only be found here! This is the main reason LYW exist, to provide the local community within Jackson County the most accurate and descriptive coverage possible. This is why LYW is "local weather for local people"!

Starting in 2007, LYW was merely a single weather station reporting to a single unit with no outside influence or even interest. Noticing the inaccuracies across the board, LYW took it upon itself to provide the most local insight possible pertaining to the weather and community news. Now in 2010 LYW has undergone a transformation with the help from AppNet (appnet.com) to create an intuitive site with ever expanding station coverage, to provide a network of accurate and reliable information. The goal of LYW is to encompass Jackson County with stations and become the one stop source for in depth weather knowledge and enlightenment. Jackson County is a true gem in terms of weather as climates range from southeastern Canada to the deep south; we truly experience almost all that nature has to offer. This is the fundamental reason why LYW exist, to study and provide an informative picture of how this unique environment functions, with the hope that each of us becomes their own weather weenie. Because with any operating weather source, the more data the better the coverage and awareness. So hopefully this website and its cause will inspire you to perform simple observations such as measuring rain or snowfall. And with all community members participating LYW and you can become the most reliable weather source exclusively for Jackson County.
